Professor Panayotis Tsakonas was NATO Research Fellow, post-doctoral Fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University (1998-99), Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the Macmillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale University (2003) and Academic Visitor at St Antony's College, Oxford University (2015). He has worked as Advisor on defense and strategic issues at the Hellenic Ministry of National Defense (1996-1998) and as Special Advisor at the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs on security issues and on Greek-Turkish relations (1999-2003). He served as board member of various academic and civic organizations (Center for European Studies/EKEM, Hellenic Institute for European and Foreign Policy ELIAMEP; Euro-Mediterranean University/EMUNI; European Security and Defence College/ESDC). 

He has given lectures and seminars, at both graduate and post-graduate level, in Greece, Cyprus, Canada, Germany, Turkey, Great Britain, and the United States. He served as external reviewer for a plethora of academic journals and international publishers and has published books, monographs and articles in peer-reviewed academic journals on IR theory, regional security issues, foreign policy analysis, Greek foreign and security policy and Greek-Turkish relations. He co-authored National Security Strategy. Building the Greek Model for the Twenty-First Century (Papazissis, 2005) and co-edited Multilateralism and Security Institutions in an Era of Globalization (Routledge, 2007). His book The Incomplete Breakthrough in Greek-Turkish Relations. Grasping Greece’s Socialization Strategy (Palgrave-Macmillan, NY, 2010) was nominated for the “Edmund Keeley Book Prize”.
